SAFMARINE is promoting four weekly services to the east coast of South America prompted by rising demand to serve trade in foodstuffs and building materials between there, the Middle East Africa and the Indian subcontinent.

The routes will link main ports of the River Plate (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay) to Brazil and Europe and on-carriage to Africa and Mideast and the Indian subcontinent.

Large 7,500 class ships with high reefer capacity will be deployed on these routes to service the 50 per cent of Safmarine exports which are perishable, including poultry, beef, fish and fruit.

These vessels are expected to enter this trade with Asia during the first quarter 2011, and also on the cabotage sea carrier Mercosul Line, ensuring regular feeder capacity, said Safmarine Brazil managing director Miguel Gomes in a company statement.

The "engine for exports" are Brazil commodities of minerals, agribusiness energy (ethanol) as well as coffee, cotton, sugar, orange juice, chicken and beef which are "feeding" the world said the carrier.
